Crawfish Boudin Balls

Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday to us Americans is fast approaching it falls on a Tuesday I believe. The day where we can over indulge before the start of lent on Ash Wednesday. So what do you do when you get tired of eating king’s cake? How about some crawfish and Cajun inspired cuisine. Have some Louisiana beers while enjoying the smells of a crawfish boil. 

So laissez les bonds temps rouler. Head out to Shoal Creek Saloon (home of Austin Cajun food) sit outside on the patio overlooking the creek while you enjoy some Cajun food. There is plenty to choose from as well. Boudin, crawfish, catfish, etouffee, oysters, shrimp, even grilled salmon and a Cajun inspired meatloaf. But if you come during happy hour you can enjoy some of their appetizers. Like fried calamari, stuffed jalapeños, boudin links, nachos and crawfish boudin balls (pictured). 

It goes from 3-6pm and at 5pm m-f they have a crawfish boil (during season) as well. The crawfish boudin balls are lightly deep fried and served with their homemade creole aioli. Not at all greasy and very full of crawfish flavor. Once you finish with those you can order your crawfish. The five pound order would be the best deal for a large group. You can also order some corn, red potatoes, butter and Andouille sausage on the side to give you that full Louisiana crawfish boil experience. The only way it would get more authentic would be to serve the crawfish on newspaper covered tables instead of plates.

Update: Need to get a king’s cake quick fix? Head to one of the nearby locations of Gourdoughs Public House and order the king cake donut. It’s flakey sugary and pretty but it’s only available for Fat Tuesday. Good luck finding the baby!
